Even what you don’t see is still there
“Today, technology makes everything instantly available. There is no longer any process, no experience – only answers” - Lee Ufan
Today we exist on surfaces. UX/UI designed interfaces give us access to humanity’s entire knowledge base. In AI-trained neural networks, machines give us the answers we need or complete our tasks. Since people are always starting from scratch, they need tools to shape social progress. These systems allow him to accelerate development. The disconnection of one’s existence from personal experiences and an alienation from reality are unavoidable.
Contemporary art is a reflection of these facts. It is often characterized as superficial, quickly produced and large-format. Based on the iconic works of the recent past, it tries to surpass the splendor of these works and yet only generates blueprints with visible AI artifacts. In art, too, the world repertoire should be reproducible and manipulable on demand. Creativity is a process of evoking what has been known and adapting to new contexts in an infinite stream. There is a lack of real renewal, invention, authenticity. If you want to counteract this development, you need courage, the ability to suffer and independence. You have to start from scratch with yourself.
At Deo Kundeo something manifests itself in the works that you cannot see, but that is immediately recognizable: the time it takes and the experience that is necessary. Parts of the image become an aesthetic experience because they look expressive but are not generated by brush strokes, but are essentially sculptures. The frequent lightness of the depictions consists of emotions poured onto the canvas. The structures are then colored. The effort of complex design in a decelerated process is the prerequisite for gaining meaning through a plastic representation that has never before existed in art.
In his main series NEW POP this principle is taken to the extreme. In analogy to pop music, it is alluded to that music, which has a light effect, is produced in a complex and experience-intensive manner. On the surface it triggers powerful feelings, is standardized in form and has the ability to go extremely viral. In the design process, however, every note is set precisely and requires the utmost care from the producer, which determines the success of the entire work.
Deo Kundeo’s surfaces reveal their complexity at second glance. The image effect is again directly linked to the creation process, the experience becomes a prerequisite for the design. Something completely new can emerge.
In prioritizing process excellence, Deo Kundeo sees itself in the tradition of abstract artists such as Brice Marden, Takesada Matsutani, Jean Degottex, Rashid Johnson and Lee Ufan.
Deo Kundeo is a full-time artist with a background in painting and music production. His mixmedia works are characterized by methodical competence and process perfection in combination with unusual material combinations. As a qualified business IT specialist, he prioritizes the code quality of his works. This is how unique interdisciplinary structures are created. His mix of materials is often taken from the hardware store. Electroluminescent foils, LED lights, hot glue, putty, painter’s acrylic and varnish paints can be found in his paintings.
Deo Kundeo is represented in collections in Berlin and Hamburg and has taken part in exhibitions in Hamburg, Berlin, Milan and London.
