On the Trail of Eternity
„Nowadays, technology makes everything instantly available. There is no longer any process, no experience—only answers.“ – Lee Ufan
Deo Kundeo is a self-taught abstract painter whose works are renowned for their color-intensive, sculptural, and textured visual language. Although his artistic career began outside the confines of traditional academies, his art seamlessly blends the analytical precision of an information systems specialist with the intuitive creativity of a classically trained musician.
Born and raised in Hamburg, Kundeo displayed a dual talent from an early age: on one hand, he tinkered with computer code; on the other, he was already composing film scores. After graduating from high school, he studied Information Systems at the University of Hamburg, where he specialized in data visualization and complex system architectures. Concurrently, he pursued formal musical training in accordion, clarinet, and vocals. Under the tutelage of Gottfried Koch, he trained as an audio engineer—an experience that profoundly shaped his sensibility for harmonic structures.
Kundeo did not discover his passion for visual art until a stay abroad in Paris, where he undertook private studies with the abstract painter Prof. Takesada Matsutani. Matsutani encouraged him to fuse his technical logic with gestural forms of expression—an impetus that continues to define his artistic signature to this day.
Later, a research fellowship took him to the Institute for Digital Media in Vancouver, where he worked under Prof. Elena Mirakov, exploring the interplay between color spectra and algorithmic patterns. This period marked his transition from experimental digital graphics to large-format analog painting. Driven by a desire to counter the virtual transience of code structures with the enduring permanence inherent in painting, Kundeo pioneered a painting technique utilizing hot glue to give tangible form to visual structures.
„Deo Kundeo’s painting engages with the dialectic of meaning and relevance, seeking to counteract the perceived loss of significance within contemporary abstract art.“ – Jenny Falkenberg
Today, Deo Kundeo lives and works in Norderstedt near Hamburg, where he works as a software developer while simultaneously presenting his abstract works in independent galleries. His paintings are regarded as an interface between technology, music, and free artistic expression—a personal „Code of Art,“ as he himself puts it. His mixed-media works are characterized by technical proficiency and process perfection, combined with unusual material combinations.
Deo Kundeo is represented in collections in Berlin and Hamburg and has participated in exhibitions in Hamburg, Berlin, Milan, and London.
